Kitchen Renovation: Basics of Cabinets Replacement

It is no surprise that the remodeling of the kitchen is at the top of the list of home improvement projects in every household. Kitchen renovation helps to significantly increase the value of your home. Most of us realize that our kitchen is more than simply a place where we spend some time to prepare meals; it is the essence of our home and an investment in your lifestyle.

Whether you are looking to create a bold and punchy contrast or an understated look to coordinate with your surroundings, the result reflects the character of the owner and the home.

The scope of the kitchen renovation project may vary depending on available resources, budget and the desire of the home owner for the change.  Very often, however, just replacement of kitchen cabinets can dramatically improve the look and feel.

Cabinet Basics

The basic cabinet component is a carcass – the frame that supports the counter and outlines doors and drawers. These are generally constructed of fir or birch plywood or particle-board, joined together with rabbeted joints and glue. Base cabinets are braced on bottom risers made from 2x4 (which become the toekick).

Doors and dowers fill the carcass openings, and the drawer faces and doors can be built three ways – as overlays (slightly larger than their slots), full overlays (the door and drawer faces nestled against each other), or insets (set flush into the carcass openings).

Designing

If you don’t feel comfortable creating your own kitchen layout, there are several options. For an involved project with a big budget, hire an architect or interior designer to draw up your plans. A good contractor can also draft something to your specifications, and he or she will be familiar with local codes.

Some home centers provide design services on computers with a CAD software – computer-assisted design program that enables you to play around with different design elements and see realistic picture of the results.

Stock or Custom?

Stock cabinets are the equivalent of an off-the-rack suit – you won’t be getting the highest quality or custom alterations, but you’ll save big. The range of frame types is limited, but there are plenty of options available: different styles of doors, sliding shelves, breadboards, wine racks, and the like.

Custom-made cabinets, on the other hand, are made to order by a cabinetmaker to fit whatever style and layout you desire. This enables you to have a more unusual design (one to fit an odd layout) or to match your old cabinets or something you see in a magazine.

In between these two choices are semicustom cabinets (also known as custom modular), which are mass-produced like stock cabinets but offer more flexibility in terms of materials, layout, and options – you can even alter heights and depths if you want.

These cabinets often take longer than both stock and custom cabinets to arrive, though, and must be ordered fare in advance.
