Leave Wild Animals Alone

Wild Birds
When you visit wild places, do not destroy or remove protected plant or animal species. Find out more about them and discover how you can contribute to their protection and possibly restoration.

Every hour, at least two species of living things disappear from the planet. In the space of a century, more than 100 mammal animal species and 150 bird species have been forever disappeared. The chief causes of loss of biodiversity are destruction of natural habitats, introduction of alien species, and the excessive exploitation of wild life.

Privately owning a wild animal is currently permitted in a many states. All across the United States, in citizens’ garages, back- and front-yards, in bedrooms and living rooms, in their swimming pools, Jacuzzi, bathrooms and basements, people keep wild animals as pets.

Some people seek wild animals as pets as they think that this is a way to reconnect with the natural world so the demand tuned the exotic-pet business into a lucrative industry.

Today more exotic animals live in American homes than are cared for in commercial menageries.  Some especially endangered species are now protected: whales, turtles, rhinoceros, tigers, pandas, and orchids are the best known. Thousands of other threatened species are less well-known but equally significant.
